When I was formulating Starless Night, I wanted to create the perfect nightcap for those like me who deal with insomnia and indigestion. Both of these things have been known to keep me up, except when I take this tea regularly. As I selected these particular herbs, I have realized they present other benefits I had yet to understand.
Ingredients: Chamomile, Oat straw, Peppermint, Licorice root, Blue pea flower
Chamomile - Commonly associated with a more relaxed mind and bowels, I added this sweet flower for its gentle flavor as well as its medicinal properties. When the dried herb is soaked in boiling water, it releases flavonoids which is a chemical that acts as a mild sedative. What I did not know was that studies have been conducted that prove chamomile may reduce anxiety when taken regularly, perfect for insomniacs like myself.
Oat straw - While the studies on oat straw are not as long standing as those with chamomile, it has been associated with improved blood flow. This was then correlated to its relation to increased feelings of relaxation, reduced inflammation, and most importantly better memory and brain function. Oat straw is also rich in essential minerals like iron, zinc, calcium, and manganese.
Peppermint - In folklore, the mint family calls in joy and prosperity. As an ingestible remedy, it can be taken for menstrual cramps, indigestion, and headaches. Its crisp scent and menthol compounds improve airflow in your nasal cavities. When you’re enjoying a cup of Starless Night, be sure to take a big sniff of its light and refreshing aroma.
Licorice root - I originally included this herb for its respiratory health benefits. Its high antioxidant content helps prevent and heal damage to the lungs. The root has also been used as a remedy to treat upper abdominal pain during digestion and can treat acid reflux better than most antacids. However, in my recent searches for hormonal balancing help, this herb has popped up time and time again. It’s currently being studied as a treatment for menopause and menstrual symptoms such as hot flashes. While this research is still in its infancy, it just goes to show Mother Nature is more powerful and multidimensional than we give her credit for in the modern world.
Blue pea flower - This gorgeous blossom that gives the tea its signature purple green color also has many antioxidants in the delicate petals. Studies correlate this is why consuming it stimulates immune function and reduces inflammation. Plus, it’s pretty to look at, which in itself is relaxing.
Don’t just take my word for it. Pick up a bag of this complex but lovely concoction in my shop and let me know if you feel the magical benefits of these herbs.
